Bills acquire WR Kelvin Benjamin in trade with Panthers

The 6 ft 5 in, 245 lb Benjamin was drafted in 2014 by the Panthers after an All-American career at Florida State.

One last big trade before the deadline: The #Bills trade for #Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin in exchange for a 3rd rounder and a 7thn rounder. He reunites with Bills head coach Sean McDermott, who was the Panthers' defensive coordinator from 2011-16.

The Bills tried to strike some gold in the offseason by bringing in Jordan Matthews from Philadelphia.

Benjamin had 32 receptions for 475 yards and two touchdowns through eight games this season. Buffalo's top receivers are Charles Clay and LeSean McCoy, and most of the damage for both men has come on short passes.

It's the latest significant trade by Buffalo since August, when the Bills dealt starting receiver Sammy Watkins to the Los Angeles Rams and starting cornerback Ronald Darby to Philadelphia. But Buffalo, at 5-2, sits right behind the first-place Patriots in the AFC East. Benjamin will have to quickly build chemistry with Tyrod Taylor before the Bills visit the Jets for a Thursday night game.

The Bills will have a decision to make on Benjamin's contract for next season as he is owed a guaranteed $8.45-million but can be cut with no dead money.

The bigger question is whether Cam Newton is going to survive this season at this point. Despite now making his way to upstate NY as a four-year National Football League veteran, Benjamin has only appeared in three seasons thus far into his tenure atop the highest level. Olsen is already facing a long rehab from an injury he suffered earlier in the campaign.

With Benjamin gone, it opens up more opportunities for smaller receiving options like Curtis Samuel, Russell Shepard and Christian McCaffrey.

These two teams actually met in Week 2 of the season. He put up a solid rookie season with 73 receptions for 1008 yards and nine touchdowns.
